Why Overweight People Struggle To Lose Weight (Leptin Resistance)

most people believe weight loss is just
about calories and yes calories are the main determinant of whether you’re going
to be losing or gaining weight but we have to consider hormones if we’re going
to be speaking about weight loss because they play an important role in today’s
video I want to talk about a hormone which isn’t given enough time on air
right we speak a lot about insulin and testosterone but leptin and leptin
resistance is something that needs to be voiced more so in today’s video I want
to talk a bit about exactly what leptin is what leptin resistance is and how you
can regulate and optimize your leptin levels in order to help you lose weight
and fat effectively many researchers are believing now that leptin is one of the
main drivers of fat gain in human beings we have ghrelin which is the hunger
hormone right more ghrelin makes us hungry leptin on the other hand is this
satiate you hormone more leptin makes us full and satiated it’s also referred to
the starvation hormone now the hypothalamus in the brain is an area
which is tightly interlinked with appetite control and also pleasure as
well but it really has a important role an integral role in appetite regulation
leptin is a hormone which communicates in is in relation with the hypothalamus
the hormone leptin is actually released by fat cells in the body and when it’s
released and then communicates with the hypothalamus
so storing fat in the body is an evolutionary advantage you store fat and
you’re able to go longer periods of time without as much food or fat or food at
all because you can sustain yourself through endogenous stores of fat and
metabolize those fat stores into energy through ketone body productions such as
beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetone so gaining fat like a squirrel who gathers
nuts for the winter or any other animal that puts on fat for the winter that’s
an evolutionary advantage in adaptation um so leptin basically signals to the
brain and communicates with the brain sort of like a conversation and says hey
here’s how much body fat I have an ESMA how much food and energy I require
right now and it kind of communicates with the hypothalamus in that way so
when leptin levels are hide the brain is like I’m satiated I have body fat we’re
good but when leptin levels are low then the brain thinks that we’re starving and
we need to get a hold of food or energy as soon as possible in order to increase
our chances of survival so wouldn’t that mean if you’re overeating a lot and
you’re becoming really fat that there’s gonna be lots of leptin being released
from fat cells telling your brain and hypothalamus that you have enough body
fat and that there’s no point in increasing the appetite because we’re
not starving there’s no need to get more fat right so that would be the theory
but it doesn’t work like that in the human body because this mechanism can be
broken as we see in individuals who are obese well it sounds good in theory but
it’s just not how it works hence the obesity problem and that’s
what I wanted well then to briefly here so when obese people there’s so much
leptin floating around and something called leptin resistance occurs you
become resistant to leptin this lots of leptin around but none of it is getting
to where it needs to be in the hypothalamus to signal to the brain that
it’s satiated it has enough body fat so what this ends up doing for someone
who’s overweight is their hypothalamus believes that they’re starving but and
that they need more food straight away and energy straight away to survive
because none of that leptin from the fat cells is getting to the hypothalamus and
it’s circulating around meaning a fat person in their head believes that
they’re starving and they just can’t stop eating you know and this is why so
many fat people you know people who have excess body weight just can’t seem to
stop eating it’s so difficult to get over these hormonal changes in the brain
or the lack of leptin getting to the brain you know you can tell someone’s
stopped eating they’re like okay but then their brain is telling them oh my
god I’m starving I need more food so you can see how how almost evil this is
right so that’s why it’s so important to understand how to kind of get out of
leptin resistance make yourself more sense
– it additionally it may cause less energy expenditure because your body is
saying if I’m starving then the last thing I ever want to do is
expend more energy without any reason – hence that person on the couch feeding
themselves potato chips are not moving an inch right it’s because no leptin is
getting to their brain you know so this this worse and worse and worse and worse
the fetter you get hence the harder and harder and harder and harder it is to
get thin and healthy the fatter you get you know now I want to talk about how
you can become more leptin sensitive right the opposite of leptin resistance
and I wish there was some special herb I could say that’s gonna work I wish I
could say take the special herb from southern China and you’re magically
going to become left and sensitive know the things that a typical of a healthy
lifestyle of what are gonna help you reduce weight and get rid of this
problem that means eating healthy that means getting a quality sleep getting
sunlight eating a probiotics eating enough micronutrients and not over
eating calories being active getting cardio and getting strength training in
all these things are gonna make a difference right so losing weight is one
of the best ways you can do this so hopefully this helps you understand more
a bit about what leptin is because it’s not talked about enough and what leptin
resistance is basically obesity causes too much leptin to circulate around not
enough to get to the hypothalamus and signal to the brain that it’s satiated
and has enough body fat so in terms of leptin resistance exercise lose weight
eat healthy soluble fiber and off sleep and the rest will surely come over time
you just have to exert a bit of willpower at first and understand that
it’s gonna be more difficult at first but will become easier with time as you
become more sensitive to the master hormone leptin thanks for watching and
