Medicare & You: Diabetes
Hi, I’m Angela James with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. I’d like to share some information about diabetes screenings and supplies, and how Medicare has you covered. Did you know that diabetes affects nearly 21 million children and adults in the United States? And millions more are un-diagnosed or have pre-diabetes and don’t even know they’re at risk. So first, it’s important to know if you’re one of those millions of people who have diabetes. That’s why Medicare covers free diabetes screenings. People with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of diabetes, are high-risk candidates. Talk to your doctor to see if you’re eligible for the free screening test Now, if you have diabetes, Medicare covers many of your supplies, including glucose test strips, blood sugar testing monitors, and glucose solutions. And with Medicare’s National Mail-Order Program, you can have diabetic testing supplies delivered right to your home, as long as you use a Medicare national mail-order contract supplier. Medicare also covers diabetes self-management training to help you learn how to better manage your diabetes. With this training you can learn how to monitor your blood sugar, control your diet, exercise, and manage your prescriptions. So talk to your doctor today about screening tests and what supplies and training you may need for your health. For more information, visit Medicare.gov.
