Female Hormones – Testosterone in Women

>>NICK: I’m doctor Tami who’s got a new
book coming out in April. Tell me about this book and what
inspired you to write this book about testosterone in women>>TAMI: Well I think that testosterone in women is
really overlooked or under looked or not looked at, at all now we focus on estrogen and
progesterone and maybe some cortisol but never testosterone and in my practice I
see patients all day, every day and it really the testosterone that was
getting people to 10x their health, their vitality, their
energy, and I know a lot of people are talking about testosterone for libido but it’s so much more, it’s so much more and the studies are astounding on its
focused and treating osteoporosis, in my traditional medical
training I never heard of testosterone to treat
osteoporosis is overwhelmingly a fantastic way to
treat depression it helps with weight loss, it helps
your muscle to fat ratio and there’s this nebulous thing called
well-being and it really helps increase a sense of well being so I really wanted to figure out a way to help women not be afraid of it because a lot of women are afraid of
testosterone, they think they’re going to grow a beard or be really aggressive, but this
program that I created is about using nutrition,
lifestyle and supplements that have been proven in
studies to really boost your own testosterone so you’re not going to
produce too much, so you’re not going to have those side effects>>NICK: Tremendous, doctor Tammy you brought up
osteoporosis and several other things you know one of the things that we look
at is that some doctors were using estrogen to build bone but when I looked
at the studies and talked to with some the experts, it builds a soft type of bone, not a really resilient good quality bone but testosterone on the other hand has been shown to build bone density
appropriately and furthermore I’m sure there’s
other hormones that you’re aware of that you’d like to encounter work with
whether it be growth factors and things that will make that work
better so osteoporosis is a big problem and
currently the drug intervention may have side effects. Isn’t there a
better way to do it?>>TAMI: The side effects aren’t just a little thing and necrosis of the jaw is huge
and there are all kinds of other side effects with the traditional you know, most often prescribed drugs for
treating osteoporosis the cool thing about testosterone with
osteoporosis is you know you can get a lot of hormones and a lot of things
to build bone but what we need, is we need a smart
healthy bone so there’s no point in packing more and more
and more bone on what testosterone does is it removes
the old crappy bone so that the new bone can be put in, in a
very strong matrix and so you end up having a more
tensile strength rather than just a thicker bone, you know
back when we had the fluoride for the teeth and you know we’re both a
little older and so we were of that generation
where we’re finding that a lot of adults our age are having their teeth crack well the fluoride made our teeth firmer and
harder and impervious to the bacteria so it did help with cavities but it made brittle teeth and now they’re cracking and then the
root canals and all of that is happening now so the
testosterone is not making bones hard it’s making them strong.>>NICK: Wow, so doctor Tami in your protocol is there
something that shows clinical evidence of reduction of body
fat, women struggle they are concerned about cellulite, they’re
concerned about excess body fat and clearly we know that some of the
testosterone converts into some estrogen so probably some herb augmentation to
make sure they usher into the right pathways>>TAMI: Absolutely, well and as you get older, you’re fatter, even if you’re the same weight as
a woman past 45, your ratio of muscle to fat changes and it doesn’t change favorably, so testosterone is thought to be the reason that you become more fat then muscle and lots and lots of studies have shown
that if that’s the only intervention you do, your muscle to
fat ratio changes and you become more muscular,
that just has a host positive sort of downhill effects, your
risk of heart disease is associated
with your fat, your risk of breast cancer is associated with your fat and just feeling confident and then when you
have more muscle muscle burns more fat at rest, so you’re
actually a more efficient eating machine, so you can eat
more similarly then when you were more fat. I have
patients who say you know Dr. Tami I swear I don’t eat
more than I used to I’m exercising the same amount, but I’m gaining weight and I had this sort of spare tire, and it’s their testosterone>>NICK: It’s not sufficient, it’s deficient.>>TAMI: Exactly and we’re not producing it anymore because of our 24/7 lifestyle you know after the age of 35-40 the adrenal glands are supposed to be picking up your production, that’s your factory.>>NICK: And the ovaries are the original site but then some women have
had a hysterectomy, now they don’t have the ovaries, then they’re depending on their adrenals to produce enough testosterone. >>TAMI: And the
adrenals after a hysterectomy, they’re not functioning great.>>NICK: Right, right.>>TAMI: So just our 24/7
lifestyle, you know people are driving in traffic and that’s a stress, they get to work and there’s 300 Emails and that’s a stress, and there’s deadlines and they’re not eating nutrient-dense food and
breathing fresh air and seeing the sunlight, so they’re not feeding their
cells and so the adrenals go from bad to worse
to worse and people are in a state of adrenal
fatigue and they’re producing cortisol because of this perception of emergency and they don’t think
that testosterone is all that important so the testosterone doesn’t get produced.>>NICK: Right, and Dr. Hertog mentioned that initially under stress, fight or
flight your body does produce cortisol to
fight the inflammation to deal with the stress but then the adrenals can’t even produce
enough cortisol and then adrenaline kicks n when adrenaline is there, it’s really harsh and
that’s where people just crash they crash and burn and they don’t know what to do so doctor Tami, I’m sensing from
your passion about this that you have a personal experience
about augmenting not only testosterone but multiple hormones.>>TAMI: Oh, you’re so good! Yes, I do, I do. so I was a resident in medical school and pregnant so you know we had to say we worked 80 hours a week but we really worked way more than that. pregnant as an intern and then two years later pregnant again with
a toddler at home and a resident still so I was completely burned out and then
after my pregnancies I went right back to my normal weight but I was tired and I thought well of course I’m
tired I have two small children, I’m a young doctor, I
have a family, I have the clinic, all that so I started looking at my blood work and
progesterone was really low and that helped me a lot, I replaced my
own progesterone and that peacefulness came back and that patience and my estrogen was still fine and then
years and years and years, I just left it as that but the fatigue came back and I thought well maybe it’s just because I’m getting
older, you know even us doctors fall into those habits of accepting
“normal” well normal is a setting on a dryer and it
should have nothing to do with a description of our health so I looked again and was shocked my
testosterone was undetectable and I was a skinny fat
person I was the same weight as
before my pregnancies but I didn’t wear skirts, I had this pouch and it was
uncomfortable and I wasn’t eating as much as I should because I gained weight, so it really
wasn’t until I replaced my own testosterone that my energy soared and my strength
and my muscle came back and now most of my patients, their primary goal isn’t libido, when my women patients talk to me they’re in their
fifties, sixties, seventies, libido isn’t the top of their list, it might
be the top of their husbands list but it’s not the top of theirs, energy is the top of their list and how they
look and feel so the testosterone brought them
their energy first and the side effect was the
libido everything but then they have the energy
to actually enjoy their libido yeah I have women tell me that they
don’t get, their husband you know goes to bed a little later than they do,
wakes up earlier with energy and you know what is it? And you
know they’re in their late forties and it’s clear and then when I do the lab work, in working with the different physicians I work with, we
look at the lab results, their free testosterone is low their total testosterone is low, the index is
not correct, right, the free testosterone index and no one’s really told them that
maybe normal for a woman of your age is what it is but it doesn’t mean that’s
optimum, does it?>>TAMI: Not at all and who wants to be normal? And
who wants to be fine? We want to be fabulous and we can, we
can, all without a prescription if you just feed your cells both nutritionally
at the right things but also I think that
it’s really important to have it at the right time you know your adrenal glands, when they’re fatigued, they really need support at certain times of the day and so there’s a lot of people
that when they snack they gain weight but when you have
adrenal fatigue you need to snack at appropriate times
with the appropriate foods, you need good fat, you need protein, right
before that crash that’s at that 3 p.m. so that they’re really supported and
if you treat your adrenals well from a nutritional and a supplement it will do their job will happen and it will happen
optimally>>NICK: Yeah I’ve been vegan for 36 years on a
plant-based diet and I probably genetically had a
predisposition to hypocortisolemia, the inability to
produce enough cortisone and also I noticed it in my daughter
with extreme symtoms and some other family members and so working with Dr. Hertog, I’d
started a protocol with hydrocortisone bioidentitcal and it worked but then I created an adrenal support
product that also supported the liver and I found
out the important involvement of the
liver to the adrenals and how it affected our
energy cycles and then it took me two years I was a
really chronic case but I no longer needed hydrocortisone my body, my adrenals produced, my energy is
at its all time high and I even discover certain herbs that
optimize my testosterone level which you know for a man who’ll be 60 in
three weeks, breaking my own world strength endurance records, and not
against guys past the age of 60 but against all time world’s strongest men
with fifty-pound you know curls nonstop for an hour, I’ve gotta put
myself in a different category and I like to be performing at its all time best, we met
at high performance Academy tell me your reaction when you met me
and why was that reaction?>>TAMI: well you know you are unique, you know we have a lot of
common colleagues and friends in this health space, but you are unique I get inundated with newsletters and all of that but yours is the one I read, because
it’s not about marketing it’s about information and it’s like a
nugget it’s kinda like my breakfast, it feeds my
brain and so I actually read your stuff and I have for years and so when you sat
down beside me I felt like the angels had brought you to me, I said, “Oh it’s you!” I was so excited to finally meet face to face because
I’ve been somebody that respected your work
for so long.>>NICK: Well doctor Tami, what is your website and state your last
name as well please.>>TAMI: I married an Italian so I’m Tami Meraglia but nobody can
say or spell that so it’s doctor Tami My website is drtami.com T-A-M-I dot com, and I have a free
free hormone quiz on my website, so it takes all the symptoms and then it gives you what likely
diagnosis and what hormone imbalances and defficiencies and then you get a hormone handbook of
all the nutritional supplemental and lifestyle things that
you can do to boost that particular hormone safely on your
own, exact doses everything that you need, I just really
want to make sure that have that information, there’s so
much out there that I feel like, you know, health
and life is a journey and we’re the tour guide.>>NICK: That’s right,
that’s right it’s wonderful you know our viewers have a chance by
subscribing to our channel and looking forward to some coming segments with
doctor Tammy and we have a number of experts that are
putting together and you will see very shortly some amazing information that
will transform your health, your family’s health and more than that, hopefully the planet,
that’s our goal Dr. Tammy, are there some other things
that you want to make sure that our audience is aware of that are absolutely essential in terms of lifestyle,
medicine, overall mental statu,s just a few other nuggets that you wanna share with
our audience>>TAMI: I think inspiration, I think that people get very frustrated and they think
that this is the way it’s going to be this what not getting older is all about,
this is what I’m gonna look like, that’s what I’m gonna feel about what do I expect, we can reset our biology and that’s what I want
people to know get armed with information for somebody
who has done the extra work to this health information and you can
change your life you can be the CEO of your own health.>>NICK: Tremendous thank you very much doctor Tami and stay
well
