Karl Müller, what’s special about
your shoe for diabetics? The elastic springy sole on the
kybun shoe encourages or forces your foot to
move with a great deal more force. This activates the muscle pump and
the vein pump, which means the circulation in the foot greatly
improves. That’s very important for
diabetics. Additionally, the distribution of pressure
is much better on the kybun sole. Plus, the shoe for
diabetics has been fitted with a special upper portion that is
highly elastic. That makes it much easier to insert your feet.
There aren’t any seams on this shoe. What benefits does the kybun shoe have
for diabetics? I need to provide a bit of
background information to answer that. Lack of exercise is one of
the main causes of diabetes, and once people have developed it, they continue
to exercise far too little. That’s why a shoe that supports movement and
muscle activity represents a great advantage
for them. How did you get the idea to
make a shoe for diabetics? It’s well-known that diabetics have
poor circulation in their feet. That makes the kybun sole
the perfect thing for them. We realized that, and then our partner in Israel
said that his doctor had come to the same conclusion. He carried out a study and found that this shoe really does a better job of
distributing pressure. He asked us to produce a
shoe with an upper portion that contains as few seams as possible. That would make for the
the perfect shoe for diabetics. And so that’s what we
made. Why is it important for the
shoe for diabetics to have few seams? Diabetics have what’s known as
polyneuropathy, which means that the pathways that
carry information to and from the brain are disrupted because of
the pressure ratios involved. That means they don’t notice
increased pressure – so it makes sense to reduce
pressure strain. Reducing seams in shoe design represents one
method of doing so.
