Ok. Right now, the primary research is focused
on trying to cure type one diabetes. Type one diabetes probably has the most dramatic
effect on the person who has diabetes. Because, they have to take insulin all the time. Because,
it’s so hard to regulate the blood sugars when one has type one diabetes. And, so the
principle focus is on that. And, what they’re looking at right now is the transplantation
of pancreatic cells from one individual to another or cloning those cells so that they
can produce an operating pancreas that actually produces insulin again. Now, we’ve had research
done on transplanting a full pancreas from one individual to another and there are problems
with that. Particularly, with the rejection of the pancreas. And, the anti-rejection medication
is often steroids and steroids causes the blood sugar to go very high. So, it’s even
harder to regulate the blood sugars. Sometimes, people have to go back on insulin again even
when they have had that transplantation. Or, they experience the very negative side effects
of steroids. Which is extreme weight gain, osteoporosis, certain nerve damage and psychological
negative psychological effects of taking steroids.
