(electronic keyboard music)>>I currently serve as
director of The John Hopkins Hospital glucose management program. Our program has really consists
of two core components. One is our inpatient
diabetes management service. We oversee two nurse practitioners who see complex patients with diabetes and assist in their clinical management. And then we have our
glucose steering committee, which I chaired for a number of years, that’s currently chaired
by Dr. Nes Mathioudakis, and the glucose steering
committee is really responsible for writing the hospital’s
glucose management policies. And so, over the course
of the last several years a combination of all of
those systems and inventions have resulted in a significant
and sustained reduction in hypoglycemia throughout the hospital. One of the things our group does, our team has mutual respect for each other and each other’s roles. And I think the one thing
that we really try to do is to listen to our constituents
and to really be there voices to hospital
leadership about things that really impact their ability
to safely care for patients with diabetes with high quality. One of the critical things is
to first identify the problem either with numerical data
or with a patient’s story, ’cause we’re all here to
take care of our patients, and then once the problems identified it’s important to get the
right stakeholders to engage with you to solve the problem. And for me, personally,
taking care of patients with diabetes and ensuring
that they have the highest quality and safest care in the hospital is one of my life’s passions.
